The last year I've enjoyed some success buying funds - especially private equity funds - trading at deep discounts NAV. I'd like to the keep track of the funds with the deepest discounts on a regular basis but haven't worked out how to do this with the screener so far.

For example the Financial Times with also uses the Reuters database shows a discount of > 40% for J.P. Morgan Private Equity Limited, but I haven't managed to replicate in the screener. Any ideas?

Using JPEL as an example, you need to insure that the you are searching the LSS (London Stock Exchange (SEATS)) exchange. These funds are usually classified under the RBSS industry code as "Investment Trusts". A screen I have used in the past is:

Menu: Descriptive->Sector/Industry->RBSS Classification = "Investment Trusts"
Free Form: Book value (tangible) in dollars-most recent fiscal year > Market capitalization

Then, I add a column to the results view like:

Book value (tangible) in dollars-most recent fiscal year / Market capitalization

and sort in descending order. That shows the funds trading at the largest discounts at the top of the page!

It is not perfect (there are some financial institutions/non-funds that get through) but I found a few interesting firms/funds trading at large discounts (on 3/13/2013) like:

SWF:ABSP Absolute Private Equity AG
TSE:TVK Terravest Capital
LSS:LMS LMS Capital
...

Thanks, Lenny. Your workaround is similar to what I've been trying. As you say it excludes some classifications. Also rough NAVs are stale unless the fund has just reported.

Do you think Reuters would be open to sharing the the monthly NAV figures that are reported by these kinds of vehicles?
